Night rating training course
With us you will learn to fly day and night! The basic PPL(H) licence entitles you to control a helicopter from sunrise to sunset only. To fly at night, an additional VFR-night rating is required. A night flight is one that takes place from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise. You will find this rating particularly useful in autumn and winter, when the day gets shorter. With this training, you will not only gain a new ability to fly after sunset, but you will also develop your existing piloting skills. It is also quite a challenge. Limited visibility and specific conditions at night make navigation more difficult than during the day. This rating is intended for applicants who already hold a PPL(H) Private Pilot Licence. It is also useful for further training for the professional licence.
Training
What does the training look like?
Theory
The theory includes 5 hours of lectures. You will learn about:
- Minimum VMC conditions at night.
- Rules for controlling the airspace at night and the equipment available.
- Rules regarding airfield surface, runway, landing area and obstacle lighting.
- Aircraft navigation lights and collision avoidance rules.
- Physiological aspects of night vision and orientation.
- On-board instrument systems.
- Practical principles of navigation.
- Principles of radio navigation.
Practical training
During training, the instructor focuses on the ability to navigate in night conditions. This gives the trainee the opportunity to learn how to take off and land in limited visibility. In addition, the trainee learns how to prepare the helicopter for night flights and how to take care of procedures, which are often slightly different than those for day flights. The apprenticeship includes 10 hours of instrument training time with an instructor on helicopters and five hours of night flight time. The student pilot shall perform at least one hour of navigational flight with an instructor and 5 solo circles. Each circle should include a take-off and landing. Upon completion of both parts of the training, the pilot will receive an entry on his/her licence, which entitles him/her to fly at night.
